IKEA Tempe Grand Opening…1 more sleep

I hope you have all brushed up on your Swedish and polished your allen keys because it is only one more sleep until IKEA Tempe opens (Thursday 3 November). It has been a long wait, almost two years of watching the Tempe store take shape but the big day has almost arrived. I drove along the Princes Highway last night and could only think that this was the calm before the oncoming IKEA mania storm. I couldn’t resist having a sticky beak through the IKEA store window to check out how things were progressing. There are a couple of finishing touches still needed inside and out, but ready or not, the doors will swing open tomorrow.

The IKEA Tempe Grand Opening weekend is going to be jammed packed full of activities. I hope everyone likes meatballs because they will be holding a Meatball Marathon and have stocked up on a quarter of a million meatballs (or 2.5 tonnes)…that’s a lot of meatbealls! There will be performances by the tribute band ‘FABBA’ , live radio broadcast by Mix106.5, the “Wheel of Flatpack” which will test your IKEA knowledge and what would an IKEA opening be without flatpack building competitions.

IKEA is implementing several strategies to try and cope with the masses which are expected at IKEA in the first couple of weeks:

1. A free shuttle bus from Sydenham station every 15 minutes 3 – 6 November and 12 – 13 November, and every 20 minutes from 7 – 11 November and 14 – 20 November.

2. It is being advertised that IKEA is only a 10-minute walk from Sydenham station in the hope that more people will take public transport and there will be less traffic on the roads.

3. IKEA is offering free home delivery from 7 – 11 November if you spend $250 of more! (Offer only valid between 5pm and 9pm and only in zones A, B and C).

IKEA Tempe store facts:
• 39,000m2 total store which is 50% bigger than the Homebush store!
• 1,775 car spaces
• 760 seat restaurant
• 59 room settings
• 3 complete homes (1 focusing on sustainable living)
• 44 checkouts

For those brave enough to head to IKEA this weekend and in the first couple of weeks, be prepared for big crowds and lots of traffic! Will my daily commute on this section on the Princes Highway become a nightmare? Do I need to find an alternate route? We will find out soon enough if the roads of the Inner West can handle an IKEA store, let alone the biggest IKEA in the southern hemisphere.
